 ICAR-NBFGR (National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources), has been discovered by Lucknow and described a new catfish species of the genus Pangasius (Valenciennes, 1840), from the river Cauvery, in peninsular India and named as P. icaria.

The species is described based on specimens collected through exploration of the river from Mettur dam, and found upstream and downstream of the River Cauvery of Shivanasamudra falls, Chamarajanagar, in Karnataka. Pangasius icaria is named after the found this Fish, parent organization Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and uses it's abbreviated form. In the vernacular Tamil language.The fish is known among the fisherfolks as ‘Aie Keluthi’ ..

    • The researchers made detailed by morphological analysis, skeleton radiography and advanced molecular markers as well as the species delimitation computational technique.
    • Through this study, they are found that Pangasius specimens from the river Cauvery different from other species of the genus Pangasius.
    • After The ICAR-NBFGR’s parent organization ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research).The newly discovered species has been christened Icaria.
    • The newly species is edible and the locals call it aie keluthi in Tamil Language.

    • The new species is different from other species of catfish by its small rounded vomerine and palatine tooth plates, mandibular barbels  and longer maxillary, more vertebrae and smaller caudal peduncle depth.
    •   In aquaculture and wild capture fisheries.Catfish has high commercial value
    • The discovery of new species help improved the strategy to manage, conserve and utilize this fish.

    About the Mettur Dam

    The Mettur Dam is the largest dam in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India. It is  the situated across the Cauvery River. It was introduced in 1934. The maximum height of 214 feet and width of 171 feet.  It took over 9 years to complete this dam havingIt is the main source of irrigation in the Cauvery Delta Region in Tamil Nadu.
